Carthology has been on hiatus for the summer, but returns strongly with a long time personal favourite. I remember seeing this a long time ago on the earlier version of Youtube, i.e a much copied and passed about VHS (Mimitube?). from memory it was a young sister Nic who showed me the goodness that is one of Australias top beardies in full flight.

All I need now is the Nigella version, but that is an entirely different genre.

This photo from F1 enthusiast the Hammonator to me sums up all that is good about motor racing. Just the fact the the autographer, Ronnie Peterson was nicknamed the Super Swede is enough,but if the lucky autographee had any sense, a quick trip to the local tattooist was probably high on her to do list.( But not probably the first thing)

This was a golden era of F1, where the pantsmen ruled. James Hunt, Jacky Ickx, Jochen Rindt were men that racing on Sunday was just one step closer to the spandex birds on Sunday night. A time where Penthouse and Trojan sponsored. You smoked in the pits, raced rental cars to the track and drank pretty much at all times.

Couldn't let the passing of one of the 20th centuries greatest, Knievel,E. go unnoted. My cousin had the sheer awesomeness that was the stunt bike playset as a young tacker. This toy made Hungry Hungry Hippos feel slow, quiet and sensible in comparison. Revving up the handle bars and firing Evel off to places unknown was almost more fun than you could handle. The supplied flaming ring of death and ramps were quickly disregarded, replaced with epic Snake River canyon style "Breakfast bar leap of faith" and "Garage stairs descent to doom" stunts that no doubt would have had your Princes Leia figures swooning.

The lessons taught by Evel and his ilk were beautifully distilled by Capt Lance Murdoch. Not only did he remind us that for him life was as simple as In action/In traction, but the simple "cut through" message that is : Bones heal, and chicks dig scars is all you need. I'd like to see your Depak Chopra/Anthony Robbins/Oprah/KAK break it down so simply. Vale Evel.

Paean to a paragon among tearooms
To Barbara Allatt, owner of the Paragon Cafe in Katoomba, Jasper Fforde was just a quiet man who enjoyed her tea and chocolates.

"She had no idea he was an internationally famous writer of speculative fiction until this column told her yesterday that her cafe had starred in his latest novel, First Among Sequels. She had stopped by his table to chat when he visited a few times last year, but thought nothing of their conversations.

Yesterday this column was able to read her this acknowledgment: "The Paragon tearooms exist in the same or greater splendour as that described in the pages of this novel. They can be found on the main street of Katoomba, in the Blue Mountains region of NSW, Australia, and no visit to the area would be complete without your attendance.

Who knows - you may even see a giant hedgehog and a tyrannical leader of the known universe sharing a booth and discussing irritable vowel syndrome in hushed tones."

First Among Sequels is the fifth book in the popular Thursday Next series. The detective hero describes the Katoomba icon as "the most perfect 1920s tearoom", filled with "the most sumptuous home-made cakes and pastries". Inside, an evil sci-fi tyrant sips afternoon tea with Beatrix Potter's petticoated hedgehog Mrs Tiggy-Winkle and a cast of other characters from books gone by.

"To tell you the truth, I was a little bit shocked, but really it's completely fabulous," Ms Allatt said. Jasper Fforde can expect a decent Devonshire tea next time he drops in."

Thanks to Arabella for this easily missed bit from the SMH. The Paragon is a long time personal favourite, with many a milkshake consumed as a young lad. It is directly across from the previous carthology generations family business. The decor is superb and the dining room out the back a must see.

As Katoomba continues its descent into grubby decrepitude it is good to see a tourist such as Mr "too good for one F" could find and enjoy one of its remaining joys. Whats next, Jason Bourne and the Jenolan Caves? Or Harry Potter and the mystery of the North Kat bogans?

This has got to be about my favourite bit from seminal landmark (sounds like a stained doona) The Late Show. Foe a long time I have proffered the theory TONY MARTIN = AUSTRALIAS FUNNIEST. His knowledge of the banal, especially bad film and TV makes the folks here at Carthology look frankly, soft. Judith Lucy does annoyed monotone like no other, and any mention of Alvin Purple always gets the ultra rare David/Margaret 10 star combo from me.

Ol' Gil has been flat out moving metal, not much time for updating. Just back from a road trip to Brisbane and back last week. Only 3 demerit points down, pretty good result. Props to Mrs (all but due) Carthology for her her co-driver efforts, just like Gentleman Jim Richards, she can steer anything, and doesn't put you behind after a driver change.

Much respect for going along with my "i've got a full book back on the licence, I'm just going for it today". Thanks also to the understanding constabulary of the Coffs Harbour region. Not just big bananas, but big smiles as well.

Go a chance to visit some much overdue friends. Tommy Giro and Sarah, The Babnuts, and Sandgate Sandra & Nick.

Can highly recommend driving the inland road, New England Highway. Much more fun than the Pacific Highway. The much lauded car & bike test track of the Putty Rd between Singleton and Windsor is worth your attention.

A couple of photos on the route. The Peter Allen Motel in Tenterfield,nothing to add really, the maracas say it all and are ripe for a bit of stencil artistry. Unfortunately missed a chance to take a shot of (in the the great Australian Thai Restaurant/ Hairdressers novelty name) HAIR DINKUM in Brisbane. "in for a haircut today sir?".. "'kin oath love"

The other photo continues my lifelong interest of animals advertising their own demise. Many have been bored senseless with this somewhat specialised interest. It all started as a small lad where a somewhat bizarre painting above Aroneys Cafe in which a man with a steers head was using a set of tongs, grilling a steak.

Every once in while they pop up , like the butchery with an aproned and knife at the ready Porky logo. I don't know why it's funny, but a Chicken conjuring up nuggets and or fried drumsticks of his own brethren with a wand just gets me (as does anything with "MAGIC" in the title.)

More big issues analysed and solved next week.

Eagerly awaiting the much heralded "Age of Love" tonight starring Mark Philpos... Phillopuss...Phillopossis, you know the "bloke with the big chocko name" to quote Billy Birmingham. As much as this sounds like top shelf entertainment, with sultry Mark forced to choose between 'Kittens & Cougars" ( the original title of 40/15 was a bit of a worry ) in a search for happiness and a cheque.

My issue however is the choice of "cat food". Sure, Mark might have bagged about as many birds as Marat Safin, and he did win us a Davis cup, but surely there were many other more worthy Aussie prospects. Newk, Mark "well i guess I better have a mo then" Edmondson, Ca$hie, Woodies, Chris Guccione, Muscles, Alan Jones, these are all worthy contenders.
Even the freshly retired Wayne "satellite tour wildcard" Arthurs should have been considered, for sympathy alone.

But when you think about it, there is only one choice. . Just like Brett Kimmorley will never say "7" like Peter Sterling, the poo/Flip/Scud/#591 does not scream winner.

The wins, the sneakers, the grand slams, the sneakers, the titles, the sneakers. Sure, he might have had a couple of health complications, and the hair isn't what it once was, but if your putting Australian tennis on show, an erratic Iraqi missile is not your man,

you need a ROCKET:

I've always had an interest in the whole Bail Bonds industry. I think it was piqued by the Robert Forster character in Jackie Brown, and reading Harry Bosch novels.

Seems to be a black art much in the same vein as used car valuing and selling. The headache factor must be massive, dealing with all sorts, being constantly lied to, and then as a last resort having to deal with people like "DOG- the bounty hunter" when yet another client skips out.

Personally I'd go for more of a Boba Fett style offsider. You know he'll get the job done, and that carbonite freezing can create quite a conversation starter when displayed in the lounge.

When we were in the US and Los Angeles especially, ads were everywhere. I love the fact that in an industry where the product is basically the same, novelty and gimmickry is the order of the day to get noticed.

The "Wheeler Bond Co" is awesome, with possibly the best use of the Jesus fish ever. I know when I'm looking to get bailed on a drug fuelled/multiple partners/porn/blasphemy related charge I'll need the understanding that a christian owned bond company brings.

Bought this last week. Not much of an expert on all things camper, but this bit of Bavarian kit took my fancy. One owner and just perfect, there is something about an older (in this case 16 years) car that has that "as new" look.

If I can't move it on at least we've got the whole nursery/extra bedroom sorted.

The one (and only) Mrs Carthology and myself have greatly taken to this latest offering from the good folks at HBO.

Series one started last week Sunday nights on SBS, I'm sure those in the bit torrent savvy Zeitgeist could catch up. Definately worth your attention, if only for everyones favourite Larry Clark KID , Chloe Sevigny, in a series of high waisted Mormon attire.

Thanks to content provider Coxy for these super cool images. I had seen promo shots of the (hopefully not so far away) Mazda Nagare before, but as is normal they were very studio, in that car mag cover attack style.

Full marks to the photographer, I love the fact that the car just looks casually parked in a fairly anonymous LA carpark (I'm sure it is Mazda HQ), and the lighting is far from 500w bright. I'll definately be in the queue for one.

However, the coming of the Nagare now means I can shelve my hunt for one of these:

This car appeared in a ticking cinematic masterpiece, the driver has recently appeared but is far from a HERO. Kudos and a quality piece of promotional tat for the name of the vehicle ( in non or fiction guise).

At the ( I've always thought presumptuously named) National Gallery of Victoria.

Maybe they are hinting at a succession from the Federation?

The selection was excellent with about 300 pairs spanning the last 20 years. It wasn't done as a spot the ridiculously rare (although there was plenty of much lusted kicks) but more of an accessible look at no end of straight fire. the blurb sums it up nicely:

Sneakers are one of the most exciting and fast-changing phenomena in youth fashion today. Sneakers: Classics to Customs features many of the most coveted examples that have become emblems of style over the past three decades. As Sneakers: The Complete Collector’s Guide declares ‘The sneaker has moved out from the sports arena and exploded into popular culture, a fashion staple that transcends race and class yet defines who you are in today’s urban tribes’.

Sneakers explores a number of themes which reflect the evolution of sneakers from functional sportswear to cult fashion. Beginning with the Classics - sports shoes that have become enduring styles - such as the Converse All Star, Adidas Superstar and Nike Air Jordan. Followed by a series of limited editions - special releases aimed at the serious wearer and collector - that have been produced by the major brands. Another aspect of limited editions, is the collaboration between sports shoe companies and designers working in other fields such as Peter Saville and Adidas, Marc Newson and Nike and Philippe Starck with Puma.
Fame and celebrity is another of the many ways that the once humble sneaker has been elevated to cult status. Finally, the involvement of artists and designers in customising sneakers has extended the creative possibilities of the form.

The exhibition displays over 300 pairs of the most style worthy sneakers. All works are sourced from private loans, mostly Melbourne and Sydney collectors. Music and animation will be an important component of the exhibition and will highlight some of the music, dance and sports subcultures that are linked to particular sneaker fads.

Checked out this exhibition the Penrith regional gallery on the weekend. Had not ventured there before, a tidy little gallery on the banks of the increasingly Gold Coast Lite Nepean River.

The blurb:

Featuring Harold David's one hundred photographic portraits and fifty one garments, including the Australian Olympic Team tracktop worn by Peter Norman during the 'Black Power Salute' protest of the Mexico '68 Olympic Games. The exhibition revolves around the people of the Sydney suburb of St Marys and VIPs of sport, dance and music. It explores the tracksuit as a symbol of both action and inaction - as the emblematic costume of many subcultures, as well as a high end global fashion garment and a mass produced utilitarian clothing option.

There really was some great portraits, definitely not just taking the piss out of bogans, and the accompanying tracksuit sheathed mannequins were schmick. Highly recommended, on for another month.

Finally. At my place of business, and no not the "khazi", we have finally acquired a vehicle with my holy grail of bad alloy wheel. Although not the much bogan fabled "Bob Jane Auscar 3 spoke" these beauties represent a great era of bad Aussie car modification. When they first came out in the late 80's i'm sure they would have been seen to take a Piazza/Exa/Twin Cam 'rolla/Swift over the top when it came to Friday night show 'n shine at Macca's. Now they have dated like Farrah Fawcett, ALF and the Australian Democrats.

This set up shown is a personal favourite, with the "big banger 15's" beautifully illuminating the ultra trick drum brakes behind. the only thing missing is the ever popular flouro colour coding of the drums/front discs.

Oh well, 'ol Gils gunna have to talk the talk to move this one. Maybe it's now OK to call them Retro or better yet "A tradition of heritage".

Found myself with an hour to kill in "little America" Penrith this morning.
Stumbled into a long standing sports shop and picked up the "Gatting ball" of a deal. These absolutlely useless zooters are OG Sheik of Tweak Nike Air Flipper 1 & 2. Found them on a shelf with more dust than a Madras pitch. How they remained stashed away since 1992 and 1997 respectively is a mystery only possibly Ian Healy could solve. With not even a sledge, i was able to pick all four pairs up for a price that could only be descibed as cheap as a Darryl Cullinan wicket.

A great stroke of luck, I feel like a Zimbabwean batsman. Any offers are welcome,TXT only please.

Ice T - High Roller

Before reality TV, before Menswear lines, before Law & Order: Squeeze the franchise dry, there was an OG. This clip rocks. In comparison to your current rapper de jour the bling is tame, but 30 seconds in when the interviewer asks: "what exactly is the definition of a high roller" you know it is the question Ice was born for. (He was also born dead, but that is a completely different genre.)

It has been ripped from someones old YO! MTV RAPS special, which must go down as the ultimate whitebread corporate branding ever. Has inspired me to dig out some old RAGE guest programmer specials I taped as a teenage dirtbag.

These were part of last years adicolor series . A colab* (* destined to become 2006 most overused word of the year) between HUF (skate/shoe shop in San Francisco run by Keith Hufnagel) and Barry McGee (aka TWIST) an artist who I am a big fan of:

The Ray fong character created by McGee is a fictitious uncle / Bail Bondsman,a very American profession if there ever was.(Think Robert Forster in Jackie Brown). I love the art on the box, these are definitely a pair for my " but really these are just like superannuation and we get some cool art at the same time ' kidding myself collection. Check out his work, easy to find all over the net.
When the shoes were released there was a minor outcry that the fong character pictured on the toungue was racist, a stylised "yellow peril" from 40's propaganda. Mcgee (who is half Chinese) said it was a self portrait of him as a kid. Adidas (allegedly) responded by saying that they would stop selling the shoe, which was itself ridiculous, as with only a highly anticipated 1000 made they had sold out straight away

There isn't much I would change about when Mrs Carthology married me in the LOVE tent earlier this year. However looking back, when will I ever have had a better opportunity to pose Mastermind style. Suit on, girl in a white dress and a photographer in attendance, an opportunity wasted.

I've always been a massive fan of the original Mastermind boxcover, with (who I imagined to be) Colonel Sanders dodgy brother, the one kicked out of the chicken business due to some "interpretive" accounting to cover massive gambling debts. Left to roam the seedy underbelly of the boardgame tour, using guile and a glare to psyche out opponents and attempt to win his way back to civilised society.

And who is the disgraced Colonels' attractive cohort. The somewhat bored expression gives little away. Maybe a backer? Keeping an eye on the money,a bodyguard, or maybe just there for the evening. We'll have to wait for the movie.

This adds a fairly frightening aspect to the whole game, with a seemingly drunk Colonel appearing to join in the family fun, playing off each other for the kids pocket money

This, however ,shows how due a "mix up with visas" the Colonel was unable to appear on the French version, instead replaced by catalogue man. Or maybe I'm reading too much into it.

The current (and by all accounts last ) series of the Sopranos is a 'kin must see. Channel 9 are screening it in the high profile spot of midnight Mondays, guaranteeing a massive audience. Hey, at least you can see a truly amazing array of phone "chat" ads.

I remember first seeing James Gandolfini in True Romance, beating the bejesus out of Patricia Arquette (well before she got psychic and would have been able to avoid the whole ugly incident). His Tony Soprano has got to be just about the best lead character in a drama ever. Now I know this sounds like hyperbole, but even the only guy that could give him a run for his money, Dr Terrence of A Country Practice, would lower the stethoscope for Tony.

Took this photo on the weekend. Your mushroom heater, mainstay of outside dining everywhere gets quite a look when tired.
This one reminds me of a trio at the races. Late in the day, with many a champers downed. Sure the daily double didn't pay, and the hats may have blown off more than once, but still hanging on to that touch of glamnour.

Spent a sun filled afternoon at Mt Tomah Botanic gardens on the weekend with Mrs Carthology.
It really does tick all the boxes: Fast (semi) copper free twisty roads to get there, quality luncheon opportunities and mackin' plants. Part of ourt visit was to show solidarity to those dinosaur brothers behind bars as shown above. It is now over 6 years since they have been caged heat.
The colour changes and the now 5m plus size of these Wollemi wonders is super impressive. They have been planted on the Gondwana walk, which is very well done and gives you that cool climate feel. Check it out, if even just to snigger at the bog garden.

Congratulations to all who completed the Zoo to Zoo ride last weekend. A gruelling journey from Taronga in Sydney to Dubbo. Much respect for anyone who is willing to don the lycra, and head over the mountains Blaxland, Wentworth and Lawson (now a prominent slip and fall law firm) style. A special shout out to Arabella who smashed the womens division, and also to Baron Von Wang who was indeed in a class of his own. I've been told over $10k was raised, 'kin awesome.

Had a crackin' day down at Wakefield Park race track with Chopalot and the Hammonator recently. If you have a need for speed, and homoerotic Tom Cruise journeys are not your bag, this circuit comes highly recommended. Over the last few years I've been lucky enough to partake in several days here and have 'kin enjoyed myself immensely in all manner of vehicles.

This time took the fairly box fresh MPS 3 which performed admirably. Milk and juice may only come in 2 litres for the V8 lover, however the 190kw and more importantly the 380 newton metres of torque certainly brought home the bacon. Just over a tonne of fun.

As always the Hammonator Mx5 was fast and smooth (just like Troy Corser), and Chopalots Millennium Falconesque Familia GTR was its' normal "Go balls out Cru" lightning fast. 3 Mazdas, all turbo, all completely different to drive and all home without breaking anything!

Clerks II: NERDFEST 37

Last night along with Mrs Carthology and Sista Nic I attended the Popcorn taxi Clerks 2 premiere with Big Kev (US version) introducing the film.
As a diehard tubby one fan, one who even forgave the schlockfest that was Jersey Girl, I was a touch apprehensive.

My co-attendees were less worried about the film but were very much enjoying themselves with some quality people watching. The people you see lining up for a Kevin Smith premiere represent a true United Nations of Geekdom . I am positive you could have answered any trivia question in the world within the collective consciousness there as long as the question involved Television/Science Fiction/Comics/ Toys and televised science fiction comics about toys.

The State Theatre (the ideal locale for the next Jay Z clip with red velvet and more gold than an Aztec) was surprisingly sold out. There was even a red carpet with attendant papparazzi. Found myself wondering who the big stars would be: Alex Papps? Millsy? The blokes from the Curiosity Show? None the less, an excited feeling prevailed.

I enjoyed the movie immensely, I think it helped being with an audience that was well versed in the world of Leonardo, NJ. Crude, vulgar, sexist with plenty of foul language, pretty much ticked all the boxes for me. Like all of his movies post Clerks, there was undeniably a mawkish cheese factor however if you are looking for "quality drama" you'd be elsewhere anyway. I've always been a sucker for the genre of Where are they now? Ala Schools Out!/Degrassi Next Generation/Facts of Life Reunion movie and I think Kevin is equally so.

Without going into a thousand spoilers (the proposed titles Still Clerkin' & Passion of the Clerks will give a pretty good idea), Randal still has all the good lines, Dante still can't act and the movie centres around growing up.

This is best shown when Randal is involved in a longwinded (how 'bout that) argument that there is only one return, and is of the Jedi and not the King. Seeing his beloved trilogy usurped by a series of movies about walking "even the trees" by a new generation does not sit well. I think this particular dialogue (especially as it involves the small dude with the big head from Alias) is up there with NERDALERT the discussion of whether independent contractors employed in the construction of the second death star where innocent victims of of left wing terrorists or indeed made their bed when taking on the job, from the original movie.

Mr Smith himself looked nothing like the character played by Brad Pitt recently. He wore the ubiquitous trenchcoat, shorts and vans, looking every bit the tubby bitch he professes to be.
We didn't stay around for the Q & A session post film, by this stage the ladies' attention and needs were focused on Portuguese chicken products. I had a nagging case of impending doom with the Q & A, visualising questions asked in the key of Comic Book Guy. "worst sequel.....ever"
On introducing the film Kevin seemed to be generally stoked that Australia was indeed down with the View Askew universe, and throughout the screening many a genuine guffaw and even the odd uncontrolled snort could be found. Sure, it was no Happy Scrappy Hero Pup, but then again, what is.

I came across an ad for this concert (also luckily available on CD from ESSGEE records) in the SMH yesterday. Please know I 'm not here to rubbish Julie. As all correct thinking Australians know, if it's an important event Anthony, J is an automatic selection for anthem duties. World Cups, Olympics, Commonwealth Bank Cup Netball minor semis, Group 10 rugby League pre season tourneys and school swimming carnivals have all felt the magic Julie touch. If you are unfamiliar with Julies great work on stage as well as a Gra Gra /Bert duo with a large green dragon, check it out. When it comes to National anthems she is basically like Mike in a # 23 Bulls singlet. Give her the ball and get the f&#k out of the way.

Simon Gallaher has also done his part. This countries ability to stage a quality production of Pirates of Penzance, and many other G&S favourites , is inextricably linked to having Simon on board. Personally, I enjoy musicals to the same degree as student protest street performance art, but hey, whatever floats your SS Pinafore.

What struck me was the title. "Together at last". Is this really an event we have been panting to see. Has it taken a special envoy, prime ministerial influence or changes to ACCC policy to make it happen? Have we had to engage the services of Jordanian trucking companies, grease the wheels of Swiss banking cartels and branch stack whaling commissions to get this event to the stage?

If you have tickets, enjoy. I'm now scanning the pages to see what can top it. Maybe Jackie Love & Ian Turpie or Rhonda Burchmore & John Blackman are just waiting in the wings to see if it is their time to come together and dive into the seemingly neverending bucket of baby boomer disposable cash.

The perfect modern American product. As a cheese lover the whole concept of cheese in a can is abhorrent. As a fan of the banal,however, it absolutely 'kin rocks. It is almost as if stocking the shelves with this cantastic joy is a 30 year joke by the cheesemakers of America.

Just having the hide to nominate the flavour Sharp Cheddar shows giant cahunas by those good folks at Kraft.

The scene above could indeed be the greatest ever. Cruelly
looked over by the academy and foreign press during award season,
RAD is still indeed so.

It speaks volumes for a movie when a future Oscar winner would
go out and (unsuccessfully) try to top this flick as a way of launching
her frizzy gingness to the world. Robert Rodriguez also allegedly had a red hot
go with his (unseen by myself) early student film El BMX Banditos.

Never released to DVD, I recently acquired an original boxed VHS copy
on my trip to Los Angeles last year. The nerdy negotiations at
Santa Monica Video were a true embarrassment for my now wife to witness.
